Hashmonaim Brigade – Haredi Combat Track
On January 5, 2025, the Hashmonaim Brigade was established as a dedicated Haredi combat brigade in the IDF. The brigade was formed following extensive staff work by the IDF, in cooperation with the Netzah Yehuda Association, with the goal of enabling Haredi enlistment in meaningful front-line combat service while fully preserving a Haredi way of life.
The brigade operates as an infantry brigade, trained and deployed according to IDF combat standards, while providing a unique framework tailored to the religious and social needs of Haredi soldiers. The Hashmonaim Brigade is intended to serve as a long-term solution for Haredi enlistment into combat roles within the IDF.
Service track
- Total service: Full IDF combat service, according to the standard infantry service length.
- Training: Comprehensive infantry training, including basic and advanced training, qualifying soldiers as combat riflemen.
- Operational service: Active service as infantry fighters, carrying out operational missions as part of the brigade.
- Professional development: Soldiers are supported in preparation for civilian life following service, including guidance and pathways for continued education and employment.
Track characteristics
- Full adherence to a Haredi lifestyle throughout service.
- Daily Torah study and ongoing rabbinical guidance, including spiritual, social, and personal support.
- Prayers with a minyan as part of the daily schedule.
- Strictly mehadrin kosher food.
- A gender-separated service environment.
- Commanders trained to lead within a Haredi-adapted military framework, while maintaining full operational readiness.
